How to make brown beef for stew?

I can't cook very well. I'll tell you what i have and maybe you can tell me what to do! I bought cubed beef, I need to know how to brown it before I put it in the crock pot. I have beef broth, beef stew seasoning packet, carrots, tiny can of tomato sauce, and potatoes. I mostly need to know how to brown the beef first. And how long to cook the stew! Please help. I can go buy other ingredients if I need them but I'd rather not.
