Help with collection problem?

I have a CC debt in collections. It was just sent to collections last month. If they will not work with me and try to sue. What exactly happens when they file lawsuit? I have been told that they can take a lein on my house (which is jointly owned and the debt is soley mine) and told that they can take my car. It is paid for (old). Don't you have right to exempt property that would include a car? If anyone has been served with a lawsuit please advise the process.
